Karela and Karela!

Yes you read it right it is Karela and not Kerala! I got this post from my old blog created in 2006-07. It was written out of hatred for 'The Karela'. The recipes were joint effort of friends particularly for one friend who used to get totally pissed off at the sight/smell/taste of the lovely Karela. Not a single one of us rightly knew anything about cooking and the outcome was 15-16 recipes in a matter of seconds.
I would never try any of these recipes except if I have to treat a foe (wicked laugh).  And I still don't know what is the English name for Karela..
Well people reading bare in mind, to prepare and taste these recipes is totally your risk. And have a good laugh if you really happened to taste any of these recipes!

1.. Karela fry (pure)
Well, this one is fairly obvious and *ahem* very delicious! First, you have to select the strongest smelling karela among the bunch. Then all you have to do is put the karela in the frying pan and put all masala and let it fry. Do not mix any salt/ mirch/ sugar etc. The taste would be absolutely mind blowing! (no pun intended). Best to serve as it is. Can also serve with roti/ rice.

2. Karela fry (standard) This one is the same as karela fry, you just fry the karela alongwith the masala except that here you put in salt/mirchi/sugar etc. This recipe doesn't bring out the best taste out of karela, but of course it is more tolerable to those without a thing for karela. Best to serve as it is. Can also serve with roti/rice.

3. Karela fry (Light) This is another variation of karela fry. For this recipe, remove the karela seeds first and the fry the karela alongwith salt/mirchi/sugar etc. This is a very bad recipe for you if you love karela. If you hate it but still dont mind eating it, then this is definitely for you! Best to serve as it is. Can also serve with roti/rice.

4. Karela ki sabzi
Same as bhedi ki sabzi except that you use karela instead of bhendi. Tasty stuff! Can keep or remove the karela seeds according to choice. Salt/pepper/sugar as required. Serve with roti/rice.

5. Karela juice (Strong)
Use unseeded karela's and dont put flavors.
Simple, just put karela in the mixer with as little water as possible and without any flavors and serve and drink. God help you.

6. Karela juice (Mild)
Use seeded karela's and put flavors.
Similar to above with the variation that here you can add more water and can put flavors too.

7. Karela chutney
All you have to do is put karela alongwith salt and mirchi with very little water into a mixer. Make a thick paste. Use this paste as chutney for dosa/roti/rice/biryani etc.

8. Karela dosa
This one must be new to you. First, prepare dosa rawa and keep for fermenting. After properly fermented, select some karela and chop them into very fine pieces. Alternatively, you can make them into a paste using the mixer. Mix this with the rawa and prepare tasty karela dosas! Serve with groundnut/coconut chutney for best combination.

9. Karela biryani (strong)
Use unseeded karela's and don't put flavors.
Prepare karela juice (strong/mild as preferred) as mentioned above. Now make biryani. Pour the karela juice over the biryani and serve! Awesome stuff. Extremely delicious.

10. Karela biryani (light)

Alternatively, you can make them into a paste using the mixer. Mix this with the rawa and prepare tasty karela Idlis! Serve with groundnut/coconut chutney for best combination.

18. Karela Ice cream
This one is a absolute winner! Make karela paste as described above. Now, put the paste in freezer and serve! Best thing to have on a hot summer day after a heavy workout. You will be blown away!

19. Raw karela
All said and done, nothing beats eating karela raw just after plucking it from a karela plant. You will instantly be transported into another world!
